TECH selects James Combs as 2009 distinguished alum

l-r: James Combs and Zachary Bloomfield

EKU's Department of Technology is pleased to announce that Mr. James D. Combs has been selected as their departmental distinguished alum for 2009.

Mr. Combs was honored during a presentation on Friday, April 3, 2009, at the annual College of Business and Technology Professional Skills Conference senior recognition luncheon.

The honor is reserved for special alumni who have distinguished themselves in their professions through excellence, dedication, and service.

Mr. Combs graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology specializing in printing management.  During his education he was enrolled in the co-operative education work program and obtained a part time job with a pre-press company in Lexington called Magna Graphic.

Magna Graphic was a top supplier of film negatives to the textbook industry.  They were, at the time, servicing major publication companies such as Houghton Mifflin, Glencoe and Harcourt Brace.  He was a systems operator working with a Scitex computer system to electronically produce film negatives.  After graduation, Magna Graphic hired him into a full-time position.  As Second Shift supervisor, he oversaw production of the electronic department; and in 1996 was promoted to Operations Manager overseeing the daily operations of the facility.

A few years later, his career transitioned to a printing company when he was hired at Walle Corporation in Winchester.  He quickly advanced to Plant Manager and was charged with handing day-to-day operations of the press floor including the plate making, ink and press departments.

In 2006, Walle Corporation promoted him to the position of General Manager.  He is responsible for total plant operations including full profit and loss and strategic planning.  Mr. Combs maintains complete authority within the areas of production, warehousing and inventory control, human resources, quality control, purchasing, estimating, and customer service. He manages a diversified employee base of 21 direct employees and 100 indirect employees.

Congratulations Mr. Combs on being selected as the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus representing the Department of Technology.

The college also honored distinguished seniors for the year as selected by their respective departments within the College of Business and Technology. Mr. Zachary Bloomfield was selected as the TECH departmental distinguished senior. In addition, recipients of scholarships and awards for the 2008-09 academic year were recognized. Students were honored for outstanding achievement and more than 40 area employers were on hand to engage in networking activities with college graduating seniors.
