Justin Roberts Selected as 2019 Distinguished Alum
EKU's Department of Applied Engineering and Technology is pleased to announce that Mr. Justin M. Roberts has been selected as their departmental distinguished alum for 2019.
The honor is reserved for special alumni who have distinguished themselves in their professions through excellence, dedication, and service.
Mr. Roberts is a 2007 graduate of the Computer Electronic Networking program, and is currently the Principal Cloud Architect for Churchill Downs Incorporated, located in Louisville, Kentucky. While a student at EKU he interned at General Electric (GE) Appliances in Louisville, KY and upon graduation was offered a position within a premier technical leadership program at GE, now known as The Information Technology Leadership Program (ITLP). After successfully completing the leadership program he transitioned to Senior Technologist at GE, and was responsible for the administration of thousands of Linux systems globally. He designed and managed a tapeless data protection environment of over four petabytes of data across the globe. During this time he was the lead Linux Architect on a global ERP implementation for the GE Lighting business.
In 2014 he became part of the Cloud Enablement team at GE Appliances, developing and managing an internal cloud environment, and building out their public cloud presence. During this time he was also the lead Linux Architect for the company, driving the use of automation to obtain consistency and repeatability across thousands of systems.
In 2016 he started working at Churchill Downs Inc. as a Cloud Architect and Systems Administrator, being promoted to Principal Cloud Architect for the company in 2018. Since starting at CDI he’s drove their use of automation and designed their cloud strategy, dramatically shifting how systems are built and managed, migrating their twinspires.com platform to the cloud and working with the development teams to build more cloud native applications.
He holds several professional certifications, including six Amazon Web Services (AWS) certifications, Six Sigma Green Belt, ITIL Foundations, and CompTIA Network+. He is scheduled to graduate with his MBA in 2020.
The AE&T Distinguished Alumnus award is based on Mr. Roberts demonstrated expertise in the computer networking area with multi-billion dollar enterprise networks, leveraging cloud architecture for managing tens of millions of dollars of transactions flowing through the systems his group manages; his ongoing professional credentialing in multiple technical areas; and a heart for service demonstrated through his visits to EKU campus on an annual basis for over a decade now, sharing his experiences with graduating networking students regarding project planning, technical competencies, and the work practices they will need following graduation in the computer/cyber systems and technology area.
Congratulations Mr. Roberts on being selected as the 2019 Distinguished Alum representing the Department of Applied Engineering and Technology.
